Results trickle in at district tally centres

Results from Tuesday’s General Election yesterday continued to trickle in to district and city council tally centres from constituency tally centres in Blantyre.

At Blantyre District Tally Centre located at HHI Secondary School, results from three constituencies out of six had been delivered as at 10am yesterday.

The results were for Blantyre West, Blantyre South West and Blantyre South East.

However, no further submission had been made as at 6pm.

The Nation checks showed that Blantyre North East Constituency and Blantyre North Constituency had already compiled results at their respective tally centres, but were yet to dispatch them to the district tally centre.

Blantyre North East constituency returning officer Elisha Nabwereko said in an interview that network challenges affected the result processing exercise.

At the Blantyre City Tally Centre located at Blantyre Secondary School, results from three out of 10 constituencies—Blantyre City Ndirande Malabada Nyambadwe, Blantyre City Chemussa Mbayani Magasa and Blantyre City Chilomoni Kabula—had been received by 10am.

Blantyre City Council chief executive officer Dennis Chinseu said in an interview that one of the challenges was that presiding officers were not submitting both printed and manually recorded result sheets at constituency tally centres.

Despite the delays, the district and city tally centres remained hosts to various activities as electoral services staff were conducting  meetings while  polling staff were returning materials used in the general election.

Police and first aid workers were also available to provide security and support.

Results from district tally centres nationwide are expected to be dispatched to the national tally centre in Lilongwe for determination by the Malawi Electoral Commission.
